Congresswoman Adams Votes Against House GOP’S Latest Attempt To Strip Away Affordable Health Coverag

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Alma S. Adams (NC-12) today voted against legislation to override the President’s veto of H.R. 3762. This legislation would undermine critical components of the Affordable Care Act and would defund Planned Parenthood. This is the 63rd vote to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act, and the 12th vote to attack women’s health care in the 114th Congress. With a 241-186 vote, the House failed to override the veto.

“Instead of fulfilling our responsibilities as a law-making body, radical Republicans in Congress would rather waste time on dead-end votes to attack women’s health and the health care of hard-working Americans,” said Congresswoman Adams. “I will continue to stand against these careless and destructive ploys to deny Americans access to health insurance and attack a woman’s right to choose. I am glad there are enough sensible lawmakers in the House of Representatives to sustain the President’s veto of H.R. 3762.”

Only six days after the New Year, and just one day after Congress came back into session, Congresswoman Adams voted against the GOP Reconciliation bill to defund Planned Parenthood and undermine key components of the Affordable Care Act. Unfortunately, the legislation passed on a party-line vote of 240 to 181. President Obama vetoed H.R. 3762 on January 8, 2016.

The legislation would:

  • Defund Planned Parenthood, leaving millions of American women without key preventive health services – including life-saving cancer screenings, well-woman exams, birth control and advice on family planning; and

  • Dismantle the Affordable Care Act. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the Republican Reconciliation bill would have taken away health insurance from 22 million Americans after 2017.
